Sara Masüger: Gedächtnislandschaften
Sara Masüger: Gedächtnislandschaften
For her exhibition “Gedächtnislandschaften” (Memory Landscapes) at Lokremise St.Gallen, Sara Masüger created a landscape that is traversed rather than merely viewed. New sculptures and a walk-in installation lead into a structure of plaster, resin and aluminium, whose forms evoke bodies, terrain and sedimented memory. The exhibition thus opens up a space of experience in which perception and memory interlock.
In Gedächtnislandschaften, Masüger treats memory not as a psychological theme but as a spatial and material experience. The site-specific installation 37 Grad (37 Degrees) settles into the hall like a walk-in topography: it may recall a mountain range, skin, sediment or an archaeological excavation. Orientation arises here not through sight alone, but equally through distance, scale and movement.
The publication Gedächtnislandschaften translates this spatially immersive exhibition into the medium of the book. Full-bleed images that appear to flow from the cover through the endpapers into the content allow the installation to work as an immersive space of experience on the page as well. Complementing the exhibition, the book presents further installation works by Sara Masüger, showing both her way of working and her practice as a method.
